EES - European Entry/Exit System
The EU's new Entry/Exit System replaces manual passport stamping with digital processing for non-EU travelers, including U.S. citizens, at most Schengen-area countries (the UK and Ireland do not participate). On your first entry, expect a passport scan, a photo, and fingerprint collection. On exit, your passport is scanned and your record updated digitally - no stamp needed. Carry the same passport throughout your trip and build in a little extra time at the border while the system rolls out.
